SYNOPSIS
Four characters gravitate around Etna, reeling from a recent earthquake and seduced by an imminent eruption. A volcanologist interprets the earth’s signals, a priest keeps the hope of his earthquake victims alive, a healer supports her acolytes with ancient healing arts, a pantheistic mystic builds a hut at the foot of the volcano and sets his spiritual goal on the turbulent summit craters.
Pietra Madre measures itself against the unpredictability of Nature by making it the pillar of its narrative.

Pietra Madre is an Artescienza SAS production from the project ‘Aitna – quattro storie e un vulcano’ (Aitna – four stories and a volcano), realised within the framework of the Patto per lo Sviluppo della Regione Siciliana (Pact for the South) FSC 2014-2020.
Boris Behncke is a German volcanologist and member of INGV Etneo, who moved to its slopes to observe it closely.
Father Sam leads the parish of Pennisi, which was hit by a violent earthquake in 2018. The priest, of Indian origin, oversees the reconstruction of the church and cares for families forced to leave their homes.
Bahman Alaj is a retired Iranian professor who has been coming to Etna for 20 years to experience it pantheistically. He lives for months in the middle of the forest, walking up to the top of the crater to “feel the hole where God cooks his soup”. Her relationship with tourists is decidedly conflicting.
Nunzia Testa is a primary school teacher. Her life is divided between the kindergarten in Camporotondo Etneo, a village at the foot of the volcano, and her home in Ognina. Nunzia is one of the last guardians of the traditional healing arts that have been handed down for centuries in Sicily: with prayers and archaic rituals, she manages to heal small and great ills.
NOTE DI REGIA
Partendo da un’indagine socio-antropologica sul rapporto tra l’essere umano e la natura, il documentario racconta la vita dei quattro protagonisti con un approccio immersivo. La fotografia predilige le vedute ampie e, quando si avvicina ai volti, lo fa senza interferire con il movimento interno al profilmico, così da coglierne le loro reazioni autentiche.
Il paesaggio in questo film è però il vero protagonista. Da qui l’idea di sviluppare la storia di quattro possibili declinazioni dell’approccio umano alla mutevolezza della Natura: la scienza, la dottrina della fede, il misticismo e la magia.
Il vulcano e i suoi moti (boati, parossismi, emissioni di gas) rappresentano il principale elemento col quale l’essere umano si confronta e dal quale si lascia condizionare nella ricerca dell’assoluto. La Natura, di cui l’Etna è considerata sineddoche, è intesa qui come soggetto col quale convivere e scontrarsi. E l’innata imprevedibilità della Natura diventa un tema centrale nel film, tema che si fa metacinematografico quando l’istanza indagatrice è quella del documentario: cinema della realtà e quindi dell’imprevedibilità
